Well done Nika!

We should definitely do it in this style, you've mixed our three illustration styles really well (that's what we were struggling with!) and I think if we add some nice typography tomorrow we'll be away!

~shed~

I did the shed with collage

Shed interior

Garden = Danger!

shed interiors - Albert's protective gear can be hung up for the viewer to drag and drop onto him.

If Albert dropped into water....

Wearing Mae Vest and diving shoes can avoid this when do gardening..

CREEP IN GRRDEN

Albert creeped in garden to avoid stumbling over flowerpots.

~~Albert~~

Collage..with moving eyes

These are a couple of ideas for our character Albert, there from a designer called Aaron Whisner.

This is form Chrissie Mcdonald and another photographer, it could work well with your idea of making a set, as she cut photographs up and uses them as 3D images:

www.chrissiemacdonald.co.uk
Clever Rocket!Yes that is a good idea it's an easy animation that shows exactly what we want to portray. For the new approach I think it would be better for the users interactivity on our web site.

However does that mean you want to drop the 'How to avoid...' situations? Ive found a photographic 3d illustration style from chrissie Macdonald who created the Kate Nash album sleave and other projects. I'll put the link and pictures up tomorrow.
An anagram of GARDEN is DANGER!! What are the chances! We could do a little typo-animation of the word 'garden' falling apart and re-forming as 'danger'...
Yea the arcade fire one is cool, definitely use some of the elements from that site. You're right about the Matt McDermott one being a bit beyond our capabilities! But it's good to dream eh! What do you reckon to the 'new approach' ideas I wrote earlier?

Other interactive websites

Ive found these two sites which may be helpful. Arcade fire's site has a really earthy feel to it with dark browns and has nice simple interactivity, which might be easier for us when implementing.
Also following the links from unseen agency we viewed on thursday I found a good motions graphics designer, however I think his work is a bit too complex for us at this stage.

www.mattmcdermott.co.uk

We could make a set and photograph it? Could be good as an environment for the website (make the interior of a garden shed)

Using a photomontage style could be good - find an old photo of a typical gardener and found objects (similar to Nika's illustrations)

More illustration styles

The 'cut-out' feel could be good for use on a website because the distinct objects could be used as buttons or other things to click on.

It would be clear which bits would be a link etc.

Reinforced fisherman's waders!

New approach

Have a look at this, it’s an article on gardening accidents by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents:

http://www.rospa.com/news/releases/2004/pr299_28_04_04_home.htm

I think a better approach would be to take on serious common injuries that occur when gardening, then make fun of them (i.e. think of funny ways to avoid them).
For example:

· RoSPA says that when mowing the lawn, you should “always wear strong shoes and trousers”. So our solution could be “when mowing the lawn, always wear reinforced fisherman’s waders”.

· The most common accident in a garden is a fall. Our solution: “when gardening, always move around by crawling on your hands and knees to avoid falling, taking care to wear gloves and knee-pads”.

· Safety around ponds: “If you have a pond, always wear flippers and a lifejacket when gardening”.

· “When gardening, always wear a biker helmet (with the visor down of course) to avoid being poked in the eye by a rogue branch”.

· RoSPA also says that men aged 30-60 have the most accidents. Our solution: “If you are a man aged 30-60, give up gardening or have a sex-change”.

We could have Albert come out of his house normally clothed, then as he does each gardening job, he puts on another item of ‘protective’ clothing, until at the end he is crawling around the garden with gloves, knee-pads, a helmet, fisherman’s waders, a lifejacket and flippers on.

He could have shed in the garden with all his protective gear in, and the user of the website could choose which item he should put on for each task.

What do you think?

JUST IDEAS

clcik the image to see big
When Albert did the gardening the train crashed into the garden suddenly.

When Albert worked with a hoe, it arouseed earthquake.

When Albert dug the ground he found someone's skeleton...

When a woman past Albert, he dug his feet.

It is downpour with lightning.

A series of accidents could be happend. Like the domino offect, flowerpot fell down one after another. Then the big noise let hen and dog were frighted. And everything became jumbled.

Scenarios

I really like the Marisa Fjarem one, I think it suits our website (maybe we could make it a bit less dark and a bit more happy, but the mixture of collage and line drawing works really well!) Maybe add a cheeky bit of watercolour as well..

Possible illustration styles

http://www.grundini.com/illustration/01/

Claims to "explain life imaginatively and individually in words and pictures".

However, possibly too 'designed' - doesn't feel organic, like a garden.

IDEAs of IllUsTraTioN

I looked some books of illstration and tried to find some different way to create our illstration. Here is some different style I thought we could use. And maybe remind you some good ideas. So how do you think about it? And which do you like?~

We coulddrawing carefully and think about color and let images exquisite.
We could do the characters carton-like .To put eyes and mouth on plants' face, etc.

Watercalor is a good way to make the images simple and look nice.

We could use the real background of gardens ( could be different gardens). And just moving background when we do animation.

We could do simple drawing and use simple color and be child-like. Or we can do paper-cut just use black and white to have a clear contrast.

We could do collage. Using leafs, grass, fabrics, photos, etc. And Making images look busy.

Audio

I think the way we use sound will determine how immersive our site feels. We could think of what noises are typically heard in a garden, e.g. birds, and have them playing in the background (with an option to turn them off). But not too loud, as gardening is meant to be relaxing!

Characters

If the user had a character to control or manipulate, it may increase interactivity.

Meet Albert an OAP with a passion for gardening. However, he's an injury prone
accidental, clumsy gardener who finds himself in various tricky situations!
Cool. We could explain/illustrate an activity and the hazard to the viewer, then give them action options to choose from (which action would avoid disaster).
We could also create a gardener character to act out gardening activities/hazards.

Scenarios

Ideas on the worst possible scenarios with extremely simple gardening tools.

How to side step a runaway lawn mower.
How to leap frog a runaway lawn mower.
How to dodge a rake heading towards your face.
How to escape a spraying hose when wrapped around your leg.
How not to dispense dirt over your shoulder.
How to scream when a spade hits your foot.

Introduction

An idea for our website name and premise:

www.gardeningcankill.co.uk

To the un-trained eye, gardening may seem like a harmless past-time, usually taken up after retirement. But do not be fooled. Each year, there are more than 75,000 gardening-related fatalities in the UK alone. This website will provide you with the definitive step-by-step guide on how to avoid peril when indulging in some of the most hazardous activities, including trowel-digging, leaf-raking, pruning and plant-watering.
